Workshop: Adaptation Planning - Next Steps for Northern Ontario Conservation Authorities
Sudbury - March 2012
In order to bolster activity in the area of climate change adaptation in Northern Ontario Conservation Authorities, OCCIAR developed and hosted a second Ontario RAC workshop in March 2012. The goal of Adaptation Planning – Next Steps for Northern Ontario Conservation Authorities was to provide the northern Conservation Authorities with practical tools and examples to help them move forward on adaptation.
- Day one of the workshop began with an update on progress made by the northern Conservation Authorities to deal with the impacts of climate change. The day continued with a series of presentations which included:
- Communication of Climate Change Adaptation, Ewa Jackson, ICLEI
- A Practitioner's Guide to Climate Change Adaptation in Ontario's Ecosystem, Al Douglas, OCCIAR
- Climate Change Adaptation Community of Practice, Annette Morand, OCCIAR
- Adaptive Management in Climate Change Adaptation, Al Douglas, OCCIAR
- Day two continued with informative sessions on examples of successful adaptation as well as tools that support adaptation at a local/watershed level. The presentations included:
- Community Engagement and Collaboration – as an example for Sudbury, Ryan Hennessey, Northern Climate ExChange
- Guide for Assessment of Hydrologic Effects of Climate Change in Ontario and Future Datasets, Mike Garraway, Ministry of Natural Resources
- The Weather and Water Gateway, Quentin Chiotti, ACER
- Update and Progress after Southern Conservation Authority Workshop Series, Charley Worte, Conservation Ontario
The afternoon of day two was dedicated to an interactive session to identify gaps and needs. This workshop provided an opportunity to revisit efforts underway to adapt in the province’s northern watersheds and to articulate the needs to support additional efforts for adaptation.
